Levitra Proves Effective in Hypertension Patients

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

A study by university investigators has shown the Schering-Plough/ GlaxoSmithKline drug Levitra to be effective in treating erectile dysfunction in men taking blood pressure products.

Hypertension is one of the most common medical conditions, along with diabetes and high cholesterol, to be associated with erectile dysfunction (ED). In addition many blood-pressure-lowering medications, particularly beta-blockers and diuretics, may adversely affect erectile function.

Levitra (vardenafil HCl), a PDE5 inhibitor, was shown to be effective in treating ED in men receiving one or more medications for the treatment of hypertension, according to data published in a recent issue of The Journal of Sexual Medicine. In this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, patients treated with Levitra experienced an 83% overall success rate in erectile function while also receiving one or more anti-hypertensive medications.

With the growing usage of erectile dysfunction drugs for correcting erectile disfunction (ED), more side-effects associated with the use of the drugs are coming to light. Doctors in Nashville are investigating one such case in which a singer took vardenafil (Levitra) at night and was hoarse in the morning. The doctors are reporting a case of a vocal fold hemorrhage associated with the casual use of vardenafil or Levitra.

The 31-year-old professional singer with reluctance told the doctors that he took a single tablet of the erectile dysfunction drug vardenafil (Levitra) before engaging in sexual intercourse the night before a scheduled singing performance in July 2005. When he began singing at about 10 a.m., he began suffering acute dsyphonia.

Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors Viagra, Cialis and Levitra comprise a relatively new class of drugs, the side-effects of which are slowly being recognized. Apart from the side effects, ED drug Levitra is a useful medication for treating ED.
